Boogie's Birthday

Birthday Parties.  Don't love them.  When the girls were little I was convinced that we needed a big birthday every year at some venue (Chuck E Cheese, Jump it up, etc).  A big party at my house was out of the question because just the thought of that stresses me out.  Hosting? Party Planning? Not my gift.

Then we had the boys and things got crazier and a lot more expensive.  Big party at big venue was also no longer an option.  We decided that only the big years would get a party and on the other years the birthday boy or girl could pick their special day events.  I do love birthdays even if I don't love the parties.  (In fact, I dubbed the day before my birthday "Sharla's Eve" so I'm obviously a fan.)

It is important to me that my kids to feel special on their birthday.  We talk for weeks about how many days until their birthday.  I get an idea of what they want to do and make suggestions and we plan and plan.  They pick the special dinner and the junk food breakfast (junk food on my terms of course.  Like gluten free cinnamon rolls).  There is lots of "Happy Birthday" singing. They also get to pick a special event.  Last year Boogie picked "A day of food".  She went out for a meal at a different restaurant with each of us.  Hilarious.  But she got to eat and she got special time with everyone.  That's what she loves.

This year she decided she wanted to go to the tide pools.  She has been dreaming about the tide pools for awhile but last time we checked low tide it was some ungodly hour of the morning.  A friend mentioned she was going to the tide pools a few days before Boogie's birthday and I asked her if that's what she wanted to do.

She said yes so I researched the best place to go not only for the sea life but practical to us.  One review had these long complicated instructions.."Look for the back walkway, walk until you see yellow umbrellas, and be careful on the rock stairs because they are slippery" No thanks.

We invited Pa to go with us and Grandma to watch the boys so they could stay home.  The beach was quiet and peaceful and we climbed around on rocks and saw beautiful things.  It was so much fun.

I had just as much fun as the girls because this is my kind of thing.  We were hoping to see an octopus and we didn't but that leaves a quest for the next time.

It was really fun that Daddy got to go with us on a random day off because he usually misses the fun stuff due to work.  It's hard to tell in the picture but he was looking out at the ocean with a monocular.  I might have been making fun of him.

As an added birthday bonus, we were there for a beautiful sunset.  We just stood and watched it in awe....while my dad kept reminding us "Watch for the green flash!  Watch for the green flash!".  We didn't see a green flash either.

When Boogie hugged me tonight she told me it was her best birthday ever.  See?  Big party not necessary.
